PRODUCT OVERVIEW

About Digital Pirani Gauge Selection for Vacuum Systems

A Pirani gauge measures the heat loss from a heated element to the surrounding gas. As pressure changes, the gas removes heat at a different rate; the instrument electronics convert that response into a pressure indication. A digital controller can present the reading and, depending on the selected equipment, may provide outputs for monitoring or control.

The method is robust for many vacuum applications, but its response varies with gas type and sensor condition. Selection should therefore consider the actual gas, working pressure region, contamination exposure, connection and the way the reading will be used by an operator or control system.

TECHNICAL SELECTION

Selection Factors to Confirm

Final suitability depends on the application and the selected product's approved technical documentation.

01

Working pressure region

Define the pressures that matter to the process rather than selecting only by the lowest published endpoint.

02

Gas correction

State the gas or gas mixture because Pirani response is based on thermal conductivity and is not identical for every gas.

03

Sensor installation

Review the port, orientation, cable route, heat sources and possible exposure to condensate or process deposits.

04

Display and outputs

Confirm whether a standalone display, relay action, analogue output or digital connection is needed and compatible.

APPLICATION FIT

Typical Application Areas

These examples guide the initial discussion; technical fit is confirmed from the actual process and operating conditions.

  • Backing and foreline pressure monitoring
  • Vacuum drying and degassing equipment
  • Laboratory chambers and research systems
  • Pump-down indication on industrial vacuum equipment

TECHNICAL NOTE

Confirm the Application Before Final Selection

A Pirani gauge is not inherently gas independent. Deposits on the sensing element, a changed gas composition or an unsuitable mounting location can alter its response, so maintenance and interpretation must follow the selected instrument guidance.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Digital Pirani Gauge Selection for Vacuum Systems FAQs

It measures how quickly gas carries heat away from a heated sensing element. Electronics relate that thermal response to pressure and present the result on a display or compatible output.

No. The measurement depends on gas thermal conductivity, so the indicated pressure may require gas-specific interpretation or correction. Share the process gas when requesting selection support.

A compatible controller may provide relay or signal functions that can be used in a properly engineered control scheme. The gauge should not be assumed to switch equipment directly without checking ratings, logic and safety requirements.
